Beauty Outside Seoul: Songdo Beach

I spent most of my childhood in Busan, and where I would spend most of my time on Songdo Beach. Songdo Beach is located in Incheon Metropolitan City, Busan. Made in July 1913, during the Japanese colonization, it is one of the oldest beaches to be alive in Korea. It is the first modern beach, and it has been loved by people as a summer vacation spot since it opened. The name Songdo came from pine trees(song), as there are a lot of pine trees near the area. You would see a beautiful shoreline along with a pine tree forest.

Songdo Beach would be perfect for you if you want to visit there with your family since it has broad sand and shallow ocean waters. These days, there are some walking trails, bike roads, and observatories, so you cannot only enjoy the ocean itself but also relax and do fun activities.

I remember making a sand castle with my mom, while my dad and little sister swam in the ocean with bright colorful swimming rings and beach balls that look like watermelons. We would build up the sand that was soggy because waves would wash them down, over and over again until we got tired and decided to go join dad playing.

But my favorite memory of Songdo beach is the day when I visited there with my grandma. We sat on a large outdoor mat and talked for hours, looking at the setting sun. I don't get to talk with my grandma face to face a lot since she lives far away from my house and I do have many things to do that she kind of gets forgotten. So having a long chat with her certainly was a meaningful experience. When night fell, we got up and walked along the shoreline to home. The memory itself was so beautiful, cool waves tickling my feet, the warmth of my grandma's hand.. I would cherish the moment until my death.

I will share with you some places you might want to visit near Songdo Beach so you can make meaningful memories too! First off we have Songdo Cloud Walk, a place where you can walk along the cliff and enjoy beautiful scenery. Or we have Songdo Cable Car (Sky Park): A cable car connecting Songdo Beach and Amnam Park, allowing you to enjoy fantastic views while passing over the ocean. Then there is Amnam Park, a natural park with pine trees, cliffs, and the ocean, popular amongst families and hikers. Lastly, I recommend Songdo Marine Cafe Street, a cafe street created along the ocean, with a variety of cafes and restaurants. All of the places I explained are near Songdo Beach, and several minutes of transportation would take you there. My recommendation is the Cloud Walk since it has a wonderful view.

Currently, Songdo Beach is developing into a complex marine space that combines culture, leisure, and tourism, going beyond its role as a simple vacation spot. Songdo, with its historical value, natural scenery, and various attractions, is loved by many people. I do hope you visit Songdo Beach if you are willing to visit Korea any time soon, maybe this summer. I will be visiting Songdo beach too, so you might meet me there, who knows?
