Exploring Andeok-myeon: Hidden Gems of Jeju’s Southern Coast

Jeju Island, known for its volcanic landscapes and rich history, has always been a place of cultural significance in Korea. Historically, Jeju served as a vital hub for maritime trade and played an important role in Korea’s development. The island is also home to unique traditions, such as the haenyeo (해녀), the renowned female divers who have been an integral part of Jeju's fishing culture for generations.

My family had the opportunity to live in Andeok-myeon, Jeju, for two years, where we experienced its beauty and culture firsthand. In this article, I’ll recommend a few places you might want to visit when you come to Andeok-myeon. I encourage visitors to explore the area on foot, as it’s the best way to truly connect with the local culture and enjoy the peaceful surroundings. With its well-maintained roads and scenic views, Andeok-myeon is suitable for walking or bicycling at a relaxed pace.

Sanbangsan (산방산), Sagye Beach (사계해변), and Yellow Store (옐로우스토어) are all located in Andeok-myeon, a 40 minute ride by car from Jeju International Airport.

Sanbangsan (산방산) is a prominent lava dome located on the southern coast of Jeju Island. Formed approximately 700,000 to 800,000 years ago through volcanic activity, it rises about 395 meters above sea level and is known for its smooth, rounded shape. Unlike typical volcanic peaks, Sanbangsan was created by a slow eruption of viscous lava, which hardened into a dome structure. The mountain is home to Sanbanggulsa, a small Buddhist temple built inside a cave partway up the slope, which offers panoramic views of the surrounding coastline. Sanbangsan is a popular destination for visitors interested in Jeju’s unique geological history and natural landscapes, as well as those seeking a short but scenic walk.

Sagye Beach (사계해변) is a quiet coastal area located on the southwest side of Jeju Island, near Sanbangsan. Known for its calm waves and wide, open views, the beach is less crowded compared to other major beaches on the island. Which offers a more peaceful environment for visitors. The shoreline is made up of both sand and volcanic rocks, a characteristic of Jeju’s geological landscape. On clear days, Sagye Beach provides a striking view of Sanbangsan rising behind the coast, making it a popular spot for photography. The area is also favored for leisurely walks, sunset watching, and enjoying the natural scenery without the bustle of heavy tourist traffic.

Located near Sanbangsan, the Yellow Store (옐로우스토어) is a vibrant gift shop known for its cheerful atmosphere and distinctive yellow-themed interior. The store offers a wide selection of Jeju-inspired items, including stickers, notepads, dolls, bags, snacks, keychains, soju glasses, book perfumes, and pens. Each product features designs that capture the essence of Jeju Island’s landscapes and culture, making it a popular stop for visitors seeking unique souvenirs. In addition to its diverse merchandise, the store’s bright and aesthetic setting has turned it into a favored photo spot, especially among Korean MZ generation travelers, vloggers, and Instagram users, who often feature it in their uploads to capture a modern and playful side of Jeju.

As a side note, If you want to visit a cafe containing beautiful sceneries, you can visit The Cliff (더 클리프) located in Jungmun (중문) which is a 20 minute ride from Andeok-myeon.

Jeju Island has very popular cafés, and The Cliff is one of them. Perched on an actual cliff near Saekdal Beach, The Cliff is a café and pub where visitors can enjoy dishes like seafood pizza, squid ink butter chicken, and fresh fruit cocktails while taking in panoramic views of the ocean. There are also outdoor beds and lounge areas, allowing guests to relax more comfortably and enjoy the sea breeze, making it a perfect place to unwind after exploring the area. The Cliff offers not only breathtaking ocean views from atop the cliff but also an exotic Southeast Asian vibe, making the experience even more unique.
