The March First Movement, also known as the Samil Movement, stands as a crucial milestone in Korea’s struggle for independence from Japanese colonial rule. On March 1, 1919, 33 Korean leaders from various sectors of society gathered in Seoul to proclaim Korea’s sovereignty. Their declaration was not just a political statement but a symbolic act meant to awaken national pride and inspire a widespread movement for freedom.
The declaration ignited a wave of peaceful protests as thousands of Koreans—students, intellectuals, laborers, and religious leaders—rallied across the country. The movement quickly became a nationwide demonstration against Japan’s colonial regime. People from all walks of life united in demanding liberty and self-rule, displaying extraordinary courage despite the oppressive conditions under Japanese rule.
The Japanese authorities responded with swift and brutal repression. Military and police forces were deployed to crush the protests with violence, leading to thousands of deaths and countless arrests. The harsh crackdown left deep scars but also strengthened Korea’s resolve. Though the movement did not immediately achieve independence, its impact was profound. It fostered a stronger national identity and inspired continued resistance. The March First Movement directly contributed to the formation of the Provisional Government of the Republic of Korea in China in April 1919.
Internationally, the movement drew attention to Korea’s plight, amplifying its call for sovereignty on the global stage. It became a pivotal moment in the global fight against imperialism. The sacrifices of those who participated were not in vain; their courage laid the foundation for future struggles toward independence.

Amidst this fight, figures like Ahn Jung-geun emerged as key leaders in Korea’s resistance. Ahn Jung-geun (1879–1910) was a committed independence activist best known for assassinating Ito Hirobumi, the Japanese Resident-General of Korea, in 1909. Born in Haeju, Korea, Ahn was passionate about preserving his country’s sovereignty and viewed Ito as a symbol of Japan’s oppressive rule. He believed eliminating Ito would weaken Japan’s control over Korea and send a powerful message of resistance.
On October 26, 1909, Ahn carried out the assassination in Harbin, Manchuria, shocking both Korea and Japan. However, his act of defiance came at a great personal cost. Captured by Russian authorities and handed over to the Japanese, he faced trial, where he passionately defended his actions as a necessary act of resistance. Despite his arguments, he was sentenced to death and executed on March 26, 1910, at the age of 30. His martyrdom, however, only strengthened his legacy. Ahn became a symbol of courage and unwavering dedication to Korea’s independence.

Ahn Jung-geun’s legacy is preserved in the Ahn Jung-geun Memorial Museum in Seoul , south Korea. The museum stands as a testament to his sacrifice and Korea’s larger independence struggle. It houses a collection of personal belongings, writings, and historical artifacts, including letters, trial documents, and objects related to the assassination of Ito Hirobumi. These exhibits provide insight into Ahn’s life, his ideological beliefs, and his crucial role in the resistance movement.
The museum not only commemorates Ahn’s martyrdom but also serves as an inspiring reminder of the values he upheld patriotism, justice, and the pursuit of national sovereignty. It symbolizes Korea’s enduring resistance to foreign domination and ocontinues to inspire new generations to honor the sacrifices of those who fought for freedom. Ahn Jung-geun’s story, along with the spirit of the March First Movement, remains an integral part of Korea’s history, embodying the nation’s resilience and determination to achieve independence.
